This fanlisting is for the fantastic Showtime television show, Queer as Folk. The show is based on the British mini-series with the same name and was adapted in 2000 by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman. Set in Pittsburgh, PA, the show deals with a group of gay friends and their everyday lives... which seems to involve clubbing, sex, alcohol and drugs. At the centre of this group is Brian Kinney, the man who everyone on Liberty Avenue wants to sleep with. However, when he meets a 17 year old named Justin, just getting to grips with his own sexuality, his life is turned upside down. The show doesn't entirely focus on the gay nightlife in Pittsburgh, it deals with some political issues too, including hate crimes and health issues. If you'd like to know more about the show itself, please head over to the information section of the site.
I saw the original version of Queer as Folk in my teenage years, and enjoyed it a lot. When I heard that there was an American version I was slightly wary because I liked the UK version. However, the US version quickly became my favourite and after I saw the whole of season 1 I never looked back. The characters are riveting, and unlike in the UK version, have had time to develop over the course of five seasons and the group is one of the best things about the show. The fact that they don't shy away from talking about sex or drugs or health issues is also fantastic because so many shows do.
The title 'Fan-Fucking-Tastic' comes from a quote by Brian in season 3, but I forget what he actually says "Fan-Fucking-Tastic" in relation to. It's one of my favourite individual lines and actually fits the show a lot - it is fantastic and they also fuck. A lot.
