Welcome to The 24th Hour, the only TFL approved fanlisting for the relationship between John Carter and Abby Lockhart from the television show ER. After Carter is stabbed, he becomes addicted to painkillers and Abby sees him shooting up in an empty medical room. The pair become friends over the next season, and Abby agrees to become his sponsor as she has previously suffered from alcoholism. Although Abby is dating Luka Kovac at the time, Carter begins to fall for her and eventually tells her that it's not fair to either of them for him to wait around for Abby and Luka to break up. However this does not seem to affect their friendship and some months after Aby breaks up with Luka, the pair start to date. Although Carter plans to marry Abby, he does not go through with it and eventually Carter breaks up with her by letter while he is in the Congo. Despite this, the pair remain friends. I think they have one of the most interesting relationships on the show and they were one of my favourite things about it. Although they are from very different backgrounds they have a lot in common with each other and their past history of substance abuse brings them closer together.
